Going retro: Sega Genesis Activator, the Wii of 1994

More often than not, it’s fun to look back on gaming history from time to time. Sometimes, you end up reminiscing over the games and consoles that you grew up with, and sometimes you actually end up discovering new things that you somehow missed at the time.

Take the Sega Genesis Activator controller, for example, which used infrared beams to detect movement and interpret your weird dancing as “Hadoken”. Now, even though it has been dubbed as the world’s worst controller in the history of video games (and you gotta admit that it looks pretty darn difficult to pull off any combo using that thing…), one has to give it a bit of credit in one aspect: it tried to change the way that games were played, much like what Nintendo had in mind when they came up with the Wii. We’re not saying that the Sega Activator succeeded, but they do deserve some points for the effort, at least.

Besides, from the looks of it, they may have laid down the basis for those really fun Para Para Paradise dance machines…
