GoW explodes into Japanese top ten chart

If certain Japanese games can be cult hits here, why not the flip-side? Just look at Gears of War. Why wouldn’t this very western-looking game with deceptively good gameplay (Not counting the gameplay, Gears is a game that, on the surface, looks like any other western shooter) not be a cult hit in Japan?

A shooter in the Japan top ten? Wha?!We’ve speculated on that train of thought before, right after news that the game sold out at some Japanese retailers. However, now that Gears of War has penetrated the top 20, it’s starting to look like its more of the actual situation than a just a mere speculation. Here’s Media Create‘s recent chart:

  1. .hack//G.U. Vol. 3 (PS2)
  2. Wario: The Seven (DS)
  3. Shining Force EXA (PS2)
  4. Wii Sports (Wii)
  5. Wii Play (Wii)
  6. Dragon Shadow Spell (PS2)
  7. Gears of War (360)
  8. Seikaiju Maze (DS)
  9. Common Knowledge Training (DS)
  10. More Brain Age (DS)

Of course, given this list, we have absolutely no idea why .hack is at the top. Perhaps the gameplay that .hack offers satisfies a certain kind of gamer (like some of us at QJ), and it just so happens that those types of gamers are more numerous in Japan. After all, they’re the guys who thought up Incredible Crisis and Cooking Mama.
