Guitar Hero II dev responds to unlockables controversy

After an editorial on the nature of unlockable content in GH2 grew out of proportion, a member of the Guitar Hero team looked into Game Stooge’s comments and posted a helpful reply that should stop the arguments about unlockable content.

In Harmonix and Activision‘s Guitar Hero II, you only start out with a handful of songs, and can’t actually unlock all of them until you play through most of the game, with some of the better songs being accessible only on advanced levels of play. As you can see, that can actually be quite a large burden on casual gamers who were unable to find any other way to get the chance to play their favorite tracks without the need for great guitar skills.

Chris Canfield, one of the game’s designers, took it upon himself to straighten things out with the nature of unlockable content in the game, offering the statement below as well as an invitation to send comments to his email address or to post additional suggestions on their website:

I just wanted to say that we knew a specific subset of players strongly holds this view about gaming. We put in the unlock-all code specifically with the hope of satisfying them… We also frontloaded as much good stuff as we could, and generally tried to ensure that they had a lot of good options at their fingertips without being overloaded. So while you may still be upset about the progression structure, you can hopefully take some solice (sic) in the fact that we were taking you into account in some way while making this game….
