Handhelds boost gaming industry
A survey by Japanese company Enterbrain has revealed that Handheld games consoles such as the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS have boosted the Japanese games industry by up to 70 Billion Yen ($667 Million). The survey has shown that revenue from games and hardware totalled 277 billion Yen this year, up from 207 billion Yen in the same period of 2005. The report suggests that this rise was down to handheld consoles, as no new home consoles have been released in Japan this year apart from the Xbox 360 which flopped in the Nintendo-Sony stronghold.
The figures also reveal that Nintendo produced the best-selling handheld console in Japan this year, which we all knew to be the DS Lite, selling 2.6 Million units, and 1.3 Million of the original DS units. If handheld consoles can make such a big impact on the Japanese gaming market, I wonder what next-generation consoles such as Sony’s Playstation 3 and the Nintendo Wii will do.
