Hitachi unveils new HDD, will hold one… TERABYTE
Hitachi 300GB holographic optical discs, my rear quarter. Hitachi just unveiled a new hard disk drive that holds the following amount of data: 1,099,511,627,776 bytes. One terabyte. One TB. Yes, we can’t believe it’s not mustard one single hard drive enclosure, either.
The Deskstar 7K1000 packs five 200GB platters running at 7,200RPM, using perpendicular recording to pack in the 1,099,511,627,776 bytes of data one terabyte demands. It uses SATA and PATA-133 interfaces to connect with the PC, and will also be available in 750GB, for those who think that one terabyte is overkill (who are these people?!). In a related development, Hitachi will also unveil a sister product, Cinemastar, also 1TB, which is optimized for home digital entertainment storage solutions and usage.
If you’re interested in a bit of trivia, 1TB is, by 2005 estimates, a little under 1/40th of the entire collection of information stored at the Library of Congress. And since you’re interested, Hitachi’s MSRP for 1/40th of the Library of Congress is US$ 399. Yes, we can’t believe it’s only US$ 399 either.
Now if you’re a PS3 owner, and since you can play swap-the-HDD-out with Sony’s console… er, sorry. The Deskstar7K1000 only comes in 3.5″, not the 2.5″ that the PS3 takes. Hopefully Hitachi will press on to shrink 1TB into 2.5 inches soon enough.
