Remember the good old days when you stole away on your lunch break just to feed your money to a coin-op that gave you the power of a .44 magnum and unleashed you on a zombie-infested city? Way back when the arcade scene wasn’t all about stomping on glowing arrows to a funky beat or juggling the musclebound version of Dr. Wily with timed hits, we had House of the Dead and its sequels to take away our hard-earned tokens and give us nightmares.

Sure, the voice that kindly reminds us to “RELOAD SHOOT OUTSIDE THE SCREEN YOU IDIOT” may get on our nerves the fifth billionth time we hear it, but as it was, Sega struck pay dirt with the on-rails zombie shooter. And in this gameplay video of the House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return for the Nintendo Wii, we see that the series has aged pretty well in terms of action…but not in voice acting.

That was another cheap shot, but in actuality, it makes the game worth playing even more. Sure, the animation may be a bit stilted and the cutscenes a bit plain, but as far as maintaining accuracy with the arcade versions is concerned, this rendition of the beloved coin-op shooter is definitely bang-on. Here’s hoping that House of the Dead 4 makes the jump as well.
