id shoots down Quake Wars cross-platform play

The highly-anticipated online tactical strategy/shooter Enemy Territory: Quake Wars will allow players to duke it out with each other, but only if everyone’s in the same platform. That means PC and console users won’t be able to frag one another, and we won’t see PS3 and Xbox 360 grudge matches any time soon.

According to Quake“>id Software‘s Kevin Cloud, making the online battlefield a cross-platform arena is possible but “consoles require a certain [adaptation], and that wasn’t something that we wanted to take on.” He also said that a level playing field won’t be easy to achieve because of control and spec disparities present in the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars twists the classic FPS experience brought to you by one of the most respected names in the genre and adds a dash of action and strategy to the gameplay. In this game, mankind faces its biggest threat to existence yet, as a maniacal alien race called the Strogg seek to cleanse the planet of man and install a new reign. The game ships late this year.
