Japan: Nintendo Wii outsells PS3 3-to-1 for January
The PlayStation 3’s efforts to catch up with the Nintendo Wii was getting some traction when it outsold the Wii 3-to-1 in Japan for the whole month of November. However, it seems that for January, the PS3 may have lost a bit of momentum as the Wii outsold it 3-to-1 in Japan. More details in the full article.
It looked like the PlayStation 3 was finally catching up to the Wii when it outsold the Nintendo console for the whole month of November. This was not the case for January though, as the Nintendo Wii regains its lead in Japan.
For the four weeks to January 27, the Nintendo Wii sold 479,931 units in Japan while the PlayStation 3 sold 165,719 units. The Wii outsold the PlayStation 3 3-to-1 for the month, which was the same ratio they were dancing around last August.
Analysts believe that the Wii regained momentum with the release of Wii Fit. Perhaps anticipation of Super Smash Bros. Brawl was also a factor (the game was released in Japan last January 31).
The race is far from over though and with the impending release of a new PS3 SKU, the console may yet again regain its traction in the race.
