Japan Wii with DVD playback confirmed?

Wii DVDWe all felt a sense of shock when we had the Wii on EDGE article a few days ago. Some of the rumored details made our heads nodding in agreement even without us knowing it. While on the other hand, a couple of them made us go “What the…,” whether in astonishment or disappointment. Clearly still in our heads, the rumor again caught our eyes today when we saw it over at GameIndustry.

More than a rumor, the gaming business site claimed a Nintendo spokesperson talked to them today to clear up the issue. In a very direct statement, the Nintendo guy said: “There are currently plans to release a version of Wii in Japan featuring DVD playback.”

We’re giving you now a five-second delay, take it all in first. If that turns out to be true, it looks like Nintendo decided it would be all for the better if they upgrade their system’s specs. The spokesperson then added, all in one breath, the new version of the Wii will be available in Japan and that “there are currently no plans to bring this model to Europe or the US.”

Well, you’re probably just shrugging your shoulder with this one thinking that every decent household has a couple of DVD players anyway, but still…we leave it at that. Also, according to GameIndustry, the representative dismissed reports that CNN has already signed up to provide content for the Wii news channel.
