Maguire: We want to have the biggest launch in history
Sony Computer Entertainment UK (SCE UK) top honcho Ray Maguire went public today and shared his thoughts about yesterday’s PlayStation 3 (PS3) launch in Europe. According to the official, they admit to having such high and ambitious retail sales for the system in the UK.
“Our egos want to make sure that we have the biggest launch in history and do it with the most amount of money ever being taken at retail. And I’m sure we’ll do that – there’ll be in excess of 100 million GBP (US$ 196.16 million) going through retailer’s tills over that weekend,” explained the managing director.
According to estimates, there will be a total of 220,000 PS3 units available for fans to grab this weekend alone. We have to say that the launch really was a surprise and thank goodness, no accidents or untoward incidents have been reported until now.
Some fans even lined up for two full days before the actual launch, and their patience and loyalty was rewarded. In case you weren’t aware, Sony gave away a 46-inch HD television and a free taxi ride home to one of the lucky PS3 buyers. So, can Sony be on its way to reliving the success of the PS2 and PSOne?
But we can never really tell, as Maguire himself believes that this is only the beginning, “That’s a huge amount of money either way you look at it. But that’s just the start. It is really about how we build a sustainable business and platform for everyone – for retailers and for publishers.”
