Microsoft plays it cool: New Xbox 360 warranty announced (again)

With concern mounting for the Xbox 360’s technical problems (aka 3RLOD) and in light of recent reports, Microsoft has decided to take measures to address the issue before it gets out of hand. That’s the message that MS’ Peter Moore is conveying via letter over at the official Xbox site, which announces the company’s new warranty plan for all current 360 owners. Here reads a segment of the letter:

As of today, all Xbox 360 consoles are covered by an enhanced warranty program to address specifically the general hardware failures indicated by the three flashing red lights on the console. This applies to new and previously-sold consoles. While we will still have a general one year console warranty (two years in some countries), we are announcing  today a three-year warranty that covers any console that displays a three flashing red lights error message. If a customer has an issue indicated by the three flashing red lights, Microsoft will repair the console free of charge—including shipping—for three years from the consoleÂ’s purchase date. We will also retroactively reimburse any of you who paid for repairs related to problems indicated by this error message in the past.

We imagine the resident 360 owners will find this news to be most reassuring – the company’s got your back. There’s also the matter of the new 360 line with new heat sinks to look forward to, but given MS has been keeping mum on the matter, we’ll reserve our energies until further info is confirmed on that. For the moment, the new warranty should cover the console’s problems until a more permanent (hopefully) fix is found.

Our gratitude goes to Slipstream0 for informing us of this big news!
