Miyamoto was One of Wii.. I Mean Us!
Do YOU remember where you were when the Wii name was announced? I remember quite clearly, and let me say that my reaction to it was not the most pleasant in the world. According to an interview with CNN, Shigeru Miyamoto was not a fan of the Wii name either!
“When we first thought about it, myself and others felt that the name Revolution was very appropriate to what we were doing,” Shigeru Miyamoto told me recently, “but [Revolution] is a name that was almost threatening to non-gamers. It wasn’t acceptable. So we thought this was more friendly and inviting.”
He does have a point. Although Revolution would have been perfect to explain what the system was about, it wouldn’t be the best name to throw at non-gamers. He also seems to have had a lot more time to get used to it – the name was finalized six months in before the official announcement!
