Musings on a “Wiiboy Portable”: possible or not?

Small as it already is, the Wii is one of the more portable games among the next-gens. Simply comparing them by size, the Wii far out-strips the 360 and PS3 with regards to smallness. Of course, the term “portable” here doesn’t mean the same as “handheld.” Strictly speaking, something portable means you can easily carry it around. But a “handheld,” in gamer-speak, talks of a device/console that is easily carried around and can be played in and of itself.

mock-up of GameCube portableThe Wii is portable, but not exactly a handheld. However, you can’t help but think… what if the Wii were actually turned into a handheld? Joystiq was able to put forth a couple of conjectures of how a “Wiiboy Portable” could be possible:

  • The Wii is tiny
  • It’s inexpensive to manufacture
  • It’s structured for low power consumption
  • The Wii remote can be built into the device housing itself

Add all of those elements in and you’ve got the makings of a possible Wii handheld device. Truly, among the three next-gens, the Wii is the closest to getting a “portable” handheld version of itself.

How soon can we expect this? Well, everything just mere speculation and wishful thinking, but if Nintendo is planning something, we won’t see anything like this any time soon.
