Navigate your way through PSP Bound v1a

PSP Bound

Alexisonfire (more commonly known as slasher) from our forums has released his latest homebrew game for the PSP today called PSP Bound. This game is a little different to the majority of homebrew games out there today as it was inspired by legendary RTS game Starcraft, and instead of being your average homebrew shooter, this game sees you navigating your way through a specially-designed obstacle course. Here’s what Slasher said:

I was thinking one day about what I should make…so I thought back to my starcraft days. I remembered playing ‘use map settings’ and there were a bunch of user-made games that got dubbed the name ‘Bounds’. These bounds were usually a series of obstacle courses, and you had to get through the different obstacles to get to the next level. They were very fun because you had to use a combination of quick thinking, and team work with your fellow players.

Once you get the hang of it this game quickly becomes very fun and all you could ask for is more maps. If you get that feeling then there is one simply answer – make maps yourself! This game was designed to be a community project. The code is based entirely on the variety of colours in a map. You can make maps very easily in mspaint (or any other image making program), and submit them to Slasher, along with a description and he will do his best to include them in the next release. However, there are some restrictions for the maps:

  • The image must be 480×272(It can be bigger if you need it to…just ask Slasher first)
  • If you’re going to make an obstacle, make sure it’s a solid colour(or a series of solid colours), for example, if you want the RGB code (200, 200, 200) which is grey to kill the player, again, let Slasher know.
  • By default, (255, 255, 255), which is black, will kill the player no matter what. Your boundaries should be black.

This does have a couple of bugs, the level selection screen flickers, some text positioning is a little off and the boss is a little messed up, but you can reassure yourself with a note from Slasher saying that there are lots of optimizations to the game itself to come, and the multiplayer mode is also on its way. More information on creating your own PSP Bound maps can be found in the forum release thread.
