From military training to music schools, handhelds have in fact become prominent learning tools because of its portability. In Japan, this trend is not lost on them as schools prepare to welcome the Nintendo DS as their latest addition to their learning curriculum.

Shigeru Miyamoto forwarded this idea himself, revealing to the Associated Press at the BAFTA last Friday that education “is maybe the area where I am devoting myself the most.” And since the DS has been widely used as a supplementary tool for museums, galleries, and aquariums, next up on their list is to roll out the DS “in junior high and elementary schools in Japan starting in the new school year.”

Somehow I have no doubt that the schools will have no trouble requiring the DS to their students. Practically everyone in Japan owns at least one unit, after all.
