Nintendo “Virtual Console” Games Will be Great Deals

ItawaSaturo Iwata, President of Nintendo Corporation, announced yesterday that games for Nintendo’s “virtual console” that will allow Wii owners to download and play arcade-style titles on their consoles will be priced at Â¥500 and Â¥1,000 ($4.50 and $8.99 USD).

Inexpensive, downloadable, arcade-type gaming may prove to be a big boon for Nintendo.  Microsoft’s “Xbox Live Marketplace” has already captured many gamers’ attention, with games costing 400 to 1,200 Microsoft “points” (about $4.50 – $12 in legal US currency). Nintendo’s competitive with that of Microsoft. Nintendo’s ability to launch a “massive library of [arcade-style] games” could leave the Redmond Washington-based Microsoft in the dust.

Iwata also talked about increasing production of the DS Lite 25%. Demand for the system in Japan has been high, and with a June 11 launch scheduled in the US, the added production will hopefully keep the system on store shelves, enabling the company to take advantage of the success of the New Mario Bros. and Brain Age.
