No Xbox 360 Price Drop Before Year-End

Xbox 360The Taiwanese newspaper DigiTimes today hinted at a possible $100 price drop for the Xbox 360, in order to compete with Sony‘s upcoming Playstation 3. The article cited unidentified Taiwanese component suppliers as it’s sources.

Now, Taiwan Microsoft spokesperson Freda Lee has denied the rumor, stating, “Before the end of this year, we have no plans to cut the price of Xbox 360.” At least, that’s an indication that Microsoft is not fully against a price drop of some sorts. When talks of a $100 price drop surfaced last month, Microsoft also had the same response.

With the Playstation 3 launching in November, the company surely must have thought out a strategy that’s not entirely relying on the success of new games like Gears Of War. In May, Bill Gates even said that they’re planning to sell 10 million consoles before the PS3 launches – as of June, they’ve sold 5 million. Another question is what to make of Microsoft’s position in the Japanese market, where Sony will clearly dominates, despite all the efforts Microsoft has taken.

Perhaps we’ll start to see the companies shifting around once they’re all on the same playground. Sony, Microsoft and, to a certain degree, Nintendo are gearing up for a full-on console war this winter. In the best case, it’s us, the customers, who will benefit from that.
