NPD reports (Canada): gaming-related sales experience 64% boost
Given that we won’t be hearing the NPD Group‘s reports for America’s April sales for a couple of hours more, let’s take a brief look at their Northern neighbor (Canada), and see how fares the console sales there.
Last month was undeniably prosperous for the region, as NPD reports that Canada’s overall game industry sales topped out at CA$ 80.7 million (US$ 73.4 million) – roughly a 64% increase in sales compared to April last year (2006).
Breaking this figure down into its components, the NPD report indicated that hardware sales in the region, pushed along by the next-gen consoles, totalled CA$ 34.2 million (US$ 31.1 million) – this was calculated to be more than double (130 %) the figures from last year. Going into specifics:
- Wii: 42,100
- DS: 34,900
- PlayStation 2: 18,000
- Xbox 360: 12,800
- PlayStation Portable: 12,100
- PlayStation 3: 7,200
Software sales are reported to be at CA $ 37.1 million (US$ 33.8 million) – a 28% increase. Here’s a lowdown of the top five games:
- Pokémon Diamond (DS)
- Pokémon Pearl (DS)
- Wii Play (Wii)
- Super Paper Mario (Wii)
- God of War II (PS2)
Rounding out the report are accessory sales:
- Wiimote
- Nunchuk controller
- Wii Points Card
- Xbox 360 Wireless controller
- PS2 8MB memory card
