One-Seg and DS: More Than Meets the Eye

One-Seg

It’s supposed to be included in the Nintendo DS along with the browser. The browser has taken quite a lot of news, but what of this other “feature”? Besides the features covered in this previous report what else can DS’ One-Seg TV tuner do? It’s more than just TV in your DS. Imagine a 16:9 aspect ratio screen and CD-quality sound, watching two to three programs on one channel, joining interactive quizzes and questionnaires, reading subtitles/more info/speech speed alterations all in your Nintendo DS. Jaw-dropping, we know.

One-Seg aims to be the new terrestrial digital broadcast of the future of Japan. All TV broadcasts in Japan will be One-Seg by 2011. Currently there are already a lot of new devices using this technology. Notables are the Toshiba Gigabeat V30T, and the most new-gen mobile phones in Japan. In a few years people will be wondering how we lived without One-Seg like we’re wondering now how people used to communicate with each other without mobile phones.

However, we reiterate that it’s the future of JAPAN. Meaning, we are stuck in the 21st Century, folks. However, Europe may be able to get some One-Seg loving as their Digital Multimedia Broadcasting has digital data terrestrial broadcasting. Let’s hope the world follows the trend.
