If you’ve ever read about OpenTyrian being ported from its DOS beginnings to the Nintendo DS, then you’ll be pleased to know that homebrew developer nuvalo has just made it possible to play this retro-flavored gem on the other money-printing machine, the Nintendo Wii. Let’s check out just how we can do that, and satisfy that shmup-hungry gamer inside all of us.
So, how do you play OpenTyrian version 0.9 on your Wii? Pretty much how you would execute any homebrew – via the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess exploit or any homebrew channel – and running the file off of an SD card. That’s pretty much it. But you have to make sure that your Nintendo Wii is fully capable of running homebrew files, so make sure to check first.
Of course, seeing as this is the first release of OpenTyrian on the Wii, there are a few bugs that still need to be resolved. One of these is pretty much the lack of WiFi multiplayer. Another is that there is currently no support for USB keyboards, or the Classic Controller. There’s also some issues with monitors with 480p resolution, so you might want to try on different TV sets as you play to get the best results.
Other than those, however, this is looking to be a very solid release. Updates as we get them, and be sure to read the readme file bundled in the archive before doing anything else. Enjoy!
