Philips, Lite-on, BenQ Spin Out Blu-ray drives
Three electronics manufacturer took the Battle of the Next-gen Optical Disks to the next level by lauching their Blu-ray Disk drives. This week Philips launched the TripleWriter SPD7000 (about $1000) internal PC drive which supports both the 25GB single and the 50GB dual-layer media. They are also availble in both write-once (BD-R) and write-and-erase forms (BD-RE).
Not to be left behind, Lite-on and BenQ followed suit. Lite-on has LH-2B1S, which has the same capability as the SPD7000. BenQ’s bet, the BW1000 drive triple writer will handle all the Blu-ray versions, along with DVD±R/RW and CD-RW media. The two companies is yet to reveal how much their Blu-ray Drives will cost. Philips and Lite-on will start shipping their units in the UK this August.
