Here’s something for those who want to get more mileage out of the PlayStation Eye camera. Someone’s been able to create and optimize the drivers needed to control the camera via PC after some exhaustive investigation into the peripheral’s innards.

Apparently, this project – turning the Eye into a PC webcam – has been going on for a while. the software is still being tested, but tipster PolishPride212 tipped us off to the latest update, which now has the Eye capturing at a good 60 frames per second.

To use the Eye as a webcam, you’ll need the driver set and the PS3EyeTest program found at the Source link. The Eye itself currently streams video in YUYV format, with each frame at 640x480x2 bytes. If you’re planning to capture using 60fps, make sure there’s no other peripheral connected to the USB host controller as the capture quality could be affected.
