PlayStation has announced that PlayStation 3 will utilize Bluetooth 2.0 EDR technology (The latest Bluetooth Specification Version) in its PS3 console and controllers. Could this be a sign that Bluetooth Technology is finally hitting its stride?

This means that right out of the box, the PS3 will be able to support seven wireless Bluetooth PS3 controllers, which will open up tons of possibilities for video games to have multi-player options. With wireless Bluetooth PS3 controllers groups of up to seven can play a game together at once, and because the PS3 Bluetooth controllers are wireless, there won’t be messy wires that tangle up.

If you’ve read through our “What is It?” section, you know that Bluetooth devices have a range of up to 30 feet or greater, depending on the specification version of Bluetooth. The reports from Sony are that the Bluetooth PS3 controllers will have a battery life of up to 24 hours, which is similar to other devices using Bluetooth technology.

The new Bluetooth specification version 2.0 EDR, which the PS3 controllers will use, provides several benefits. Bluetooth 2.0 EDR can transmit data at rates of up to 3.0Mbps. Also, with built-in Bluetooth technology, the PS3 should be capable of supporting other Bluetooth devices like Headsets, handheld devices, Keyboards, and/or Mice.

Although the Sony PSP handheld does not support Bluetooth, it will be able to wirelessly connect to the new PS3 console via the built-in Wi-Fi connection. Reports indicate that the PSP will act as a remote and somewhat more advanced controller for the PS3.

The new boomerang-like Bluetooth PS3 controllers have a sleeker, curvier design than the previous PS2 controllers. However, the Bluetooth PS3 controllers appear to have the same number of buttons and analog joysticks as the PS2 controllers. The notorious circle, square, X and, triangle buttons are in the same positions as the old controllers, and the dual analog joysticks and D pad are arranged the same.

The on-going battle for dominance in the video game console market continues to intensify between the industry leaders, Sony and Microsoft. Microsoft plans on releasing there newest console, the Xbox 360, sometime around the 2005 holiday season, which will be months before Sony’s expected PS3 launch in the spring of 2006. However, Sony doesn’t appear to be concerned that their arch enemy will be beating them to the market. Sony expects to retain its console leadership through the loyalty of its gamers. Plus the PS3 promises to offer features that Sony believes will out-perform the Xbox 360, one of the biggest is the Bluetooth PS3 controllers.

Like the new PS3 controllers, the Xbox 360 controllers will be wireless, however, only the PS3 controllers will use Bluetooth technology. So, what this means is while the PS3 will be able to support up to seven controllers, the Xbox 360 will only support up to four controllers. This is a huge plus for the PS3 and its wireless Bluetooth controllers.
