PlayStations unbought: A PS3 scalper’s sad tale

Lost money - Image 1Here’s a tip for folks looking to sell PS3s to earn the cash to buy an engagement ring for their girlfriend: buy an engagement ring with the money you used instead.

The Globe and Mail reports the story of one Derek O’Brien, who had managed to purchase two PlayStation 3 units in the hopes of selling them for a huge profit, then using them to buy a ring for his long-time girlfriend. Instead, bad timing on his part left him with two unsold units, the result of an inaccurate speculation of Christmas console sales.

The problem: instead of capitalizing on the launch rush, O’Brien’s bet was on the Christmas season to increase consumer interest in the PS3. As we’ve all noticed, however, PS3 prices online dropped sharply after the initial rush, leaving many scalpers out in the figurative cold once again.

As much as we don’t like scalpers, a sad tale is still a sad tale.
