PS3 gets Geomerics’ Enlighten engine as well
There’s this certain game engine called Enlighten. It was created by UK-based graphics developer Geomerics. A couple of weeks ago, we reported that Enlighten has been made compatible with Microsoft’s Xbox 360, not to mention it being incorporated to Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 3.
Geomerics is now saying that it has done the same with Sony‘s PlayStation 3 (PS3). What Enlighten will do to the entertainment system is enhance the quality of video games being played on it. If you want the technical side of things, the engine will provide the PS3 with physically-based realistic lighting with dynamic lights in real-time.
Geomerics CEO Gary Lewis mentioned,
We will be creating cutting edge technologies across a range of complex and challenging areas, each optimised to take full advantage of the PS3 architecture. This will offer developers massive savings in time and cost, while simultaneously improving the quality of the games they can deliver.
Going back to the technical stuff, the software solution does its magic by achieving frame rates of up to 100Hz on common graphics hardware. He comes in dynamic lighting which includes point spot-lights, area lights, texture-based lighting, glowing objects, and the projection of video onto geometry.
Geomerics CTO Julian Davis added,
We are delighted to have been given the opportunity to develop on the PS3. We believe that by harnessing the power of both the Cell processor and the GPU our lighting technology will help to realise the full graphics capability of Sony’s console.
