Report: Gamers 18+ play more Wii, also tops purchase intent survey

Now that both Sony and Microsoft have unveiled their big steps into motion gaming, there’s a lot of talk about how the Wii is going to hold up in the fight. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime rushes to the defense of the Wii, to disprove what he called “false assumptions” about the Wii. This time, though, he’s got a survey to back him up.

Fils-Aime cited a survey conducted by research firm Ipsos in February 2010, which found that 51% of adult Wii owners use the console for at least two hours a week. By “adult”, they mean folks aged 18 and up. The number is significantly lower for the competition, where the Xbox 360 had 26%, and the PS3 at 22%. “The share of play on Wii…is higher than its share of ownership,” Fils-Aime pointed out.

Ipsos also looked into their respondents’ console purchase intent within the next six months, and rather surprisingly, the Wii still came out on top with 11%, followed by the PS3 with 8%. “Not only is purchase intent effectively that of the PS3 and Xbox 360 combined,” Fils-Aime said, “but this shows that as many people plan on buying a Wii…as the 360…iPhone…iPod and iPod touch put together.”
