Rockstar, Amazon team up to bring downloadable tunes to GTA 4

 With Grand Theft Auto 4 (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360) speeding full throttle into our consoles, the details on it just keep pouring in. This time, we’re informed that the game will feature a music download system to enhance the in-game radio experience that the series popularized. The in-game radio feature popularized by Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto franchise is about to get better than ever with its latest installment Grand Theft Auto 4 (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360). The devs have just announced a deal with Amazon.com which will mark a revolution of sorts in the relationship between gaming and music.

GTA 4 will introduce Rockstar’s ZiT technology which allows players to download songs from Amazon via the game’s mobile phone interface. By dialing ZIT-555-0100, players receive a text message with the song and artist names. Registering into the game’s Social Cub community site will also entitle players to receive a link via email directing them to a playlist where songs tagged with “ZiT” can be previewed and purchased.

Each song will be worth US$ .89 to US$ .99. The best part of this deal is that all the tracks downloaded will be free of Digital Rights Management (DRM), and can therefore be transferred to a PC and other devices.

Rockstar Games says that this is a definite improvement over other games with song download features that allow the tracks to be played only within the game. GTA 4‘s system allows you to enjoy its music whether you’re on Liberty City’s streets or in the comfort of your living room.
