Got a bricked Wii but no money for a SaveMii dongle? Well, some enterprising Wii owners have apparently managed to copy the functionality of a SaveMii dongle using only a GameCube controller.

Apparently, the trick works by plugging the GameCube controller into port 4 and pressing down on all the D-pad buttons (Up + Left + Down + Right) while booting up your Wii. You will probably need to take your GameCube controller apart first so that you can press down on all directions. Check it out for yourself in the video embed below.

It’s not a mass-produced clone, but this could really put a hurting on Team Twiizers‘ plans for their SaveMii dongle. As they said before, “the market for this device is probably not big enough”, and if there’s a free alternative, where do you think Wii owners will turn to?

Anyway, I haven’t tried this trick out myself yet (I don’t have a bricked Wii), but there has been some pretty positive responses about it.
