SCEA clarifies Xfire deal- Service limited only to Untold Legends

XfireAfter what many might call an eternity, there seemed to be some shiny skies for Sony and the PlayStation 3 fans. Now a counterpart of Xbox Live can never be bad. While it might have not been as comprehensive and cool as Xbox Live, the PS3 fans would probably still have a lot to cheer about.

Well, sorry to break the bubble here, but it seems that it is not to be. Representatives of Sony Computer Entertainment America have hurriedly refuted the earlier reports. They’re saying that although there is a kind of collaboration between SCEA and Viacom (Xfire), it’s currently only limited to a single game – Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom.

That entry in the PC version of Xfire about this title suddenly makes sense, doesn’t it? And the fact is that Xfire’s presence isn’t confirmed in Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom either! Here’s the official quotes from unnamed SCEA representatives:

“This proposed deal is completely separate and independent from the PlayStation Network Platform, and is something that SOE was examining specifically for Dark Kingdom.”

“We can confirm that Sony Online Entertainment is in talks with Viacom and Xfire for a single, specific PS3 game. However, there are no announcements at this time regarding any discussions between SCEA, Viacom and Xfire.”

“Xfire is not part of the PlayStation Network Platform. We are in discussions with Sony Online Entertainment, but I cannot comment any further.”

Now they aren’t flatly denying the presence of Xfire in the core network platform; It’s presence is still clouded by doubt. We guess we can only wait and see what the future about the network platform holds for the PlayStation 3 fans. I, for one, would love to see the presence of a unified network platform; something on the lines of Xbox Live. Let’s just hope for the best.
