Seeing Second Life with a New Pair of Eyes

Second Life is a growing online MMORPG by Linden Lab that allows you to, really, live a second life in the virtual world, Matrix-style. As simulations go, this is as hardcore as it gets! You can meet other people, buy your own house, or even prostitute yourself. Well, recently, their system just got an upgrade the other day, and people have been noticing bugs smattered all over the place.

Take for example, this poor, unsuspecting girl from Transylvania:

I have a secret: I see dead people...

No, I don’t think she meant to do that to her avatar. Warren Ellis encountered her and is suspecting that some graphical bug mixed stuff up in people’s avatars due to the upgrade rollout. He says that he’s even seen these kinds of error messages “tattooed” on some avatars’ skin. Clearly the system is referring to a script that has mysteriously disappeared or got lost. And since it can’t find it, you get snippets of error messages in avatars’ eyes, hair, arms, legs…

And that’s actually freaky when you think about it. And some day, in the real world, you meet someone whose tongue has some strange programming code swathed across it. Yeeeeesh!
