Sega talks about Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games
It’s nice to see Mario and Sonic getting along together for a change, after more than a decade of being the poster boys of gaming rivalries between Sega and Nintendo. Now that they’re set to compete against each other in the upcoming Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, is there hope that gaming rivalries will put an end to their conflicts and just get along?
Talking about the latest Nintendo and Sega tie-in is Sega UK’s Product Manager Grant Gie, who gave a demo of the Nintendo Wii version of Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games. The demo is still in its earlier stages, so the roster is still incomplete and the animation a bit choppy.
Gie assures us that there will be more characters in the game than what is already present in the demo. Each character will have their own pros and cons so players can just choose whatever character they think will fit their playing style, or just learn to master the strengths and weaknesses of their favorite Nintendo or Sega characters. Sonic, for instance, has a remarkable top speed but has low acceleration.
Some Olympic in-game events were also demonstrated: 100-meter dash, triple jump, and hammer throw. In the 100-meter dash, the key is to punch the B button to power up the power meter, taking care not to go over the limit. It’s almost the same thing principle with the triple-jump event: just get your speed right to get better jumps.
The game certainly looks good for now. With games letting well-loved characters compete and play against each other, such as Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, and not to mention Super Smash Bros. Brawl, there’s certainly hope that even bitter rivals can go along together, even if it’s just for a game.
