Shake 4.1: The Last Version?
Shake is touted as “The Perfect Extension for Final Cut Studio”, allowing filmmakers to create visual effects with a complete toolset for both single artists and visual effects facilities. But the latest version, v1.1, a Universal version that saw a significant price drop from $3,000 to $500, is rumored to be the last release of Shake.
There has not been an official word from Apple that this will indeed be the last version of the Final Cut add-on. The only indication that seem to be pointing in that direction is the fact that Apple has decided to discontinue its maintenance program. According to Shake users who have contacted Apple regarding software maintenance issues, they received a reply from Apple that they will no longer receive further updates for Shake. Apparently, Apple is now focused on developing the “next generation” software. Straight from Apple:
“Apple will no longer be selling maintenance for Shake and no further software updates are planned as we begin work on the next generation of Shake compositing software.”
The netvine has it that Apple’s next-gen software will be based on the Motion code.
