Sony “feeling good” about Blu-ray

Blu-ray discs - Image 1Don’t be feeling blue about Blu-ray, because Sony certainly aren’t. The revolutionary DVD format which stores up to 50GB of data on a standard disk (even more in some cases) is something essential to the PS3’s success, with the PS3 essential to the success of the format in turn.

It might not have the backing of the porn industry but the ever-growing Sony is confident that the robust DVD format will prevail, over HD-DVD. Sony’s Chief financial officer Rob Wiesenthal, said “We are feeling really good about Blu-ray right now, but it is early days.”

The cynics amongst you may believe that the ‘early days’ part of the statement refers to the teething problems the blu-ray format has had and the threat of other formats, but Wiesenthal carried on to say that,

In Japan, about 96% of the hardware being sold for high-definition format are coming from the Blu-ray family. It’s a format with over 100 different CE manufacturers. Obviously we have the launch coming up in Europe for PS3. So we are feeling very good about that.

Stick that in your pipe and smoke it HD-DVD!
