SpeccyDS v0.1aSpeccyDS, the Sinclair ZX Spectrum emulator for DS, has been updated by CraigT to version 0.1. Despite the improvements, SpeccyDS v0.1 is bugged by a few glitches and these are some of the known issues you may run into:

  • Sound emulation is not 100% accurate and can be scratchy at times
  • Several games do not work, or work incorrectly including Starquake, Chaos and Megabucks
  • Several features are missing such as snapshot saving, keyboard assignment and display properties.
  • Only .SNA files are currently supported
  • There is no visual feedback to indicate the state of the Caps Lock and Symbol Shift keys

If those don’t bother you, then go ahead and install SpeccyDS on your handheld.

Top Screen
This screen displays the main Spectrum display. Borders are not currently displayed.

Touch Screen
This screen will change depending on the current operation. The screen will display one of the following:

  • Keyboard – The keyboard can be used in the same way as a normal Spectrum 48K spectrum but only one key can be pressed at once.
  • The Caps Shift and Symbol Shift keys are ‘sticky’. If selected, they will stay depressed until they are selected again. There is currently no visual feedback to indicate the state of the buttons The delete is located on the shifted 0 key.
  • The ‘Reset’ button performs a hard reset of the Spectrum.

Controls
This screen is displayed after selecting the ‘Controls’ button on the keyboard screen and is used to define the behavior of the Nintendo DS d-pad and buttons.

Kempson, Cursor, Sinclair 1, and Sinclair 2 joystick assignments can be used by selecting the relevant button. The keyboard button assigns the following controls:

  • Up – p
  • Down – l
  • Left – q
  • Right – w
  • A – z
  • B – Space
  • L – 5
  • R – 8

Upcoming versions of SpeccyDS will feature user-definable keys. Selecting an option will return to the keyboard screen and continue the emulation.
