SSBB update: Retro-gaming with the the Masterpieces mode
A large chunk of the fun in playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl comes from knowing you’re controlling one of your favorite retro gaming characters.

It appears that Nintendo’s done a bit of in-house advertising for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. We’re letting you know that a new game mode has been announced for SSBB, one that will certainly rouse the curiosity of those here eyeing a chance at some free classic gaming.
The mode is called Masterpieces, and it allows you to play a demo of some of the titles that SSBB‘s growing cast of characters made their debuts.
While Super Mario Bros. is a shoe-in for this mode, other titles like Star Fox 64 and Super Metroid are also among the teasers you can run. Here’s a list of the currently revealed games for Masterpieces:
- Ice Climber (1985, NES)
- Super Mario Bros. (1985, NES)
- The Legend of Zelda (1987, NES)
- Kid Icarus (1987, NES)
- KirbyÂ’s Adventure (1993, NES)
- Super Metroid (1994,Super NES)
- Star Fox 64 (1997, Nintendo 64)
Keep note that we said these are just demos. The full games can be purchased and downloaded via the Virtual Console.
