In this episode of HomeKit Insider Podcast we discuss new Google devices for the smart home. We also answer two listener questions and provide an update on Sonos’ app. Google will host an event in August, but we already know about some of the surprises. These include a new Nest thermostat as well as an Apple TV competitor. The Nest Smart Learning Thermostat will launch with second-generation wireless sensor technology. It is likely to support Matter, meaning that Nest could be used natively within the Home app. Other improvements include a refreshed look, a touchscreen and air quality monitoring. It’s not clear what the connectivity will be, but it is likely to be Wi-Fi. Google’s new streaming box is another device. Google is moving away from HDMI dongles and instead launching a flat white box similar to Apple TV 4K. iRobot has released its latest smart vacuum cleaner and mop, the Roomba Combo Max Robot + AutoWash dock. It will be iRobot’s first device that supports Matter. The D-Link Omna app will sunset on July 31. This means that the first HomeKit Camera is no longer available. The cameras will continue to work if you own one, but the app won’t allow you to manage recordings. Sonos’ CEO apologized for the app launch and outlined plans to correct its course. The speaker company will release bi-weekly new features, and has revealed its priorities for October. The Wall Street Journal also reported that Amazon was preparing a paid version for Alexa. Its smart assistant may cost as much as $10 per month when it launches. Martin asked about the backup of his smart home and Danielle sent us a great Apple Health toothbrush.
