Word on the street is that Red Dead Redemption is banned in the UAE. Word from another, more specific street has it that the United Arab Emirates is not the only country scorning the game. According to news site Herald, the Irish aren’t to happy with the game’s town drunk, who also happens to be named Irish.
The character, Irish, is depicted as your typical town drunk – “Usually found stumbling around and getting into trouble with sober townsfolk while attempting to talk his way out,” as quoted by the Herald article out of “a popular gaming forum.” Even Rockstar Games, developer of Red Dead Redemption, pegs the drunk as “a teller of tall tales, who’ll try to talk his way out of anything.”
Though the character refers to an old stereotype about the Irish, the author of the Herald article didn’t specify how exactly the Irish have reacted over the supposed controversy. The article, the title of which reads “Irish ‘drunk’ sours launch of hit game” focused more on the game’s background than the drunk part.
