Matt Fischer, Apple’s App Store Vice President, will leave the company in the next few months, as the tech giant prepares for a restructure to respond to global regulations. Fischer has been responsible for the App Store since 2010. After Fischer’s departure, the App store team will be divided into two teams: one for Apple’s Store and another for alternative apps distribution. In an email to his team, Fischer said: “After 21 years with Apple, I have decided to step down from our incredible company.” “This is something I’ve been thinking about for a while, and now that we are reorganizing our team to better manage the new challenges and opportunities, it’s the right time to pass the baton on to two outstanding leaders in my team.” Carson Oliver, senior director at Apple who will manage Apple’s App Store, will replace Fischer. Ann Thai, director of App Store Features, will lead the new team responsible for alternative distribution. Apple’s walled-garden App store, which is often referred to as anticompetitive, has been criticized for several years. It has been the focus of many investigations by authorities around the world. Apple allowed developers to launch third-party apps stores in Europe as a way to comply with EU regulations. Apple Fellow Phil Schiller said that third-party apps stores pose a security and safety risk to iPhone users.
