They Sell Game Consoles by Weight in Japan?

It could be Babelfish’ tongue rolling out of synch or it could be one those things the Japanese do differently from the rest of the world. But we checked the HiroIro website and apparently they sell game consoles by the kilograms and not by the unit.

If true, what does this mean? The PS3 which weighs 11 pounds or about 5kg sells over there for $525 instead of $599. The 3.5kg Xbox 360 would gave a price tag of $336 so it’s better to purchase it elsewhere. The DS Lite, which is a mere 9 ounces (0.3kg), goes for $200 and the 260 gram PSP is about $186.

You can double check our math and our currency conversion if you like. But before you do, we think that would fall under the category of “exercise in futility”.
