Time says PS3 “Not Worth the Hype”
We’re sorry to say, dear Sony fanboys, that Time Magazine is not impressed with the PlayStation 3. A recent editorial view by Lev Grossman notes how, despite large demand, there isn’t anything really special to make the PS3 a worthwhile purchase just yet… unless you want to wreck it, of course.
For one thing, Grossman acknowledges that the Cell Processor is powerful, though the hype behind the processor might be there to cover up the PS3’s deficiencies. As he says in a parenthetical remark, I’m sorry, but naming a computer chip is like naming your genitals: you’re compensating for something.”
For the most part, he does make some valid points. The high price of the console, coupled with the fact that HDTV owners are the ones who’ll really get an actual benefit from the PS3 graphics power and the lack of an actual HDMI cable upon purchase, does happen to be a big turn-off. The lack of any outstanding PlayStation 3 exclusives (Gears of War trumped Resistance among reviewers, for instance) and the realization that many of the games out for the PS3 can be found elsewhere also hurts the console’s viability at this early stage.
Of course, that’s just one opinion. You can be sure there are other write-ups that are positive. In the meantime, it’s time to wait and see how the different game companies will compete for position once the Wii launch has concluded and the hype dies down.
