To Protect and Serve: Q&A with Positron
In an earlier article, we featured an interview with Positron (aka Matthew Miller) on what you guys can expect from City of Heroes‘ eighth expansion called “Protect and Serve.” Now, we bring you more details about Issue 8 straight from the game’s lead developer, Matthew Miller.
For those who haven’t been following the game’s developments, the eighth expansion (entitled “To Protect and Serve”) will mark the first time that the Cryptic team returns its focus on the original game since the City of Villains was launched. The expansion will have newspaper-like missions, city zone overhaul, and a new reward system for veterans.
On the safeguard missions: The objective of these missions is to stop an ongoing bank robbery from being fully accomplished. If successful, you can then go around Paragon City fighting crime, and earning bonus rewards in the process. The Safeguard missions replaced the Mayhem ones in the Police Band missions, and every 3 to 5 of PB missions will unlock a Safeguard mission.
On remaking the Faultline zone: Back when very few characters had travel powers, it was difficult to go around Faultline which had tons of holes and rubble, that led players to generally avoid the zone. Because of this, Faultline was the least populated zone in the game. The developers thought of raising the zone level in order for players to have travel powers and for Faultline to have its own missions and storylines.
On the veteran reward system: We’ll let Matthew explain this to you guys himself: “Basically you get credit for having an active “City of” account with PlayNC. This credit includes any free months from game purchases, plus time used that you have paid for. We do not give you credit for times you had your account deactivated, but if you reactivate your account, your time picks up right where it left off.”
There will be special rewards every three months, so long as your account remains active for that whole period. And what’s great is that because the rewards are account-wide, all your characters can access them, thus allowing your character to have different costume pieces, temporary powers, etc. The team is currently planning more rewards for longer periods of account activity.
The interview goes on to tackle the invention system, non-combat pets, adding wings to the costumes and tons more. Read all about it by clicking on the link below.
