Toshiba to Declare Truce on HD-DVD vs Blu-ray War in the Future?
Toshiba announced it is still thinking of developing a unified format for advanced optical DVD discs. Toshiba president Atsutoshi Nishida said “We have not given up on a unified format. We would like to seek ways for unifying the standards if opportunities arise.”
The failure of the two groups to settle on a unified format has resulted in a bloody battle duplicating the VHS–Betamax war in the 1970s and 1980s. That war caused widespread consumer confusion and those who sided with Sony‘s Betamax format found themselves shifting to the winner’s camp.
Toshiba is the proponent of next-generation HD DVD optical disc technology and has already released its machine in Japan. Toshiba didn’t say if they will still work on the unified format should they win the war.
