**UPDATE** Full throttle: SCE confirms maximized PSP speed

SCE confirms full throttled CPU for PSP - Image 1We earlier reported that one of our insiders picked up word that the official PlayStation Portable FW 3.50 has an unlisted feature concerning the handheld’s CPU speed.

We learned that PSP owners will now finally be seeing commercial games running at 333MHz, delivering accelerated framerates as well as faster loading times. To make the report official, online gaming site ShackNews tried to contact Sony Computer Entertainment.

One representative from SCE confirmed our earlier report to the said gaming site. However, the spokesperson failed to confirm if the video game titles released prior to the firmware update will be able to utilize the full speed of the CPU.

While this is a big development for the PSP scene, it seems that there are things a lot bigger and more important behind all these if you factor in the much-talked about and much-rumored PSP redesign. It is needless to say that running games at full throttle definitely sacrifices battery life.

And we believe that Sony didn’t just unshackle the PSP, so to speak, without that in mind.

UPDATE: With its continuous discussions with Sony Computer Entertainment, online gaming site ShackNews has further learned that the full CPU speed of the the PlayStation Portable will only be available for titles which are currently in development.

Those video games that have already been released will still use whatever CPU speed they have been designed to use. There will be no change whatsoever to their performance or battery consumption as clarified by the SCE spokesperson.

The full throttle of the CPU came with FW 3.50 but it was never included in the official changelog.
