Valve Founder Disses PS3 & Xbox 360

Ever wonder what would happen if Michael Moore & Jabba The Hut had sex? Apparently, they’d make Gabe Newell, the founder & director of Valve. I didn’t even Photoshop those pictures. I swear that’s how “he” looks. “He” recently conducted a two-part video interview with 1up, and had a fewunkind things to say about developing games for the Xbox 360 and PS3. Here’s what “he” said:

“The Xbox 360 doesn’t make my life any better, in fact it makes it a lot worse and now you’re telling me that I can’t count on a hard drive.”

He wants to make games that can compete with World Of Warcraft, but with the lack of a hard drive, he doesn’t feel that Microsoft is giving him that ability.

The PS3 is designed to use “asymetrical multi-threaded code”, but that is something entirely new to him. Everything has to be re-written specifically for the PS3.

“Incredibly few programmer[s] can code properly on the (PS3’s) SPE’s”
Finds that the PS3 architecture requires a lot more planning in the early stages of a games development.

Code written for the PS3’s SPE’s is virtually useless on all other platforms. It could be part of Sony’s strategy to make the PS3’s code so unique that developers won’t be able to port their code over to other systems.

The PS3 is akin to the Sega Saturn in that it’s complex architecture does not address to developers problems, it just creates more. Likens it to the Saturn solving the sprite problem, when they should’ve been solving the polygon problem.

For all the talk about Sony creating the PS3 with the developers in mind, Michael The Hut sure doesn’t seem to think so. But I’m sure that really isn’t the true issue at hand. Other developers seem to dealing with it.
