Yves Guillemot: Ubisoft loves Nintendo
Red Herring caught up with Yves Guillemot at a recently conducted company event in San Francisco, and managed a few questions for Ubisoft‘s president and CEO. Following a recent announcement by the company of their blockbuster line-up of titles for 2008, Ubisoft continues to perform well on all next-gen platforms and even on the PC.
But since Ubisoft is one of the most noted publishers that has done well on the Nintendo Wii despite the abundance of lackluster ports for the new-gen console, it became apparent that Ubisoft was undoubtedly more successful than some publisher giants in the industry.
What entails their success on a platform where other publishers struggle? Ubisoft loves Nintendo. Period. Guillemot elaborated Ubisoft’s sentiments:
We were extremely impressed by [NintendoÂ’s] new path, and thought it could give our game creators a new way to express themselves and create new sensations. We talked to people in the company; they loved Nintendo. We thought it was a great opportunity to create something new.
We had a new machine that our creators loved that would be cheaper and totally different. We said “LetÂ’s go, letÂ’s take the risk.” Developers pushed us. When they understood they could create something [new] it was not a risk anymore—it was an interesting new way of playing.
