Disc format is here to stay

disc formatIf there is one thing giants Microsoft and Sony could agree on during these tumultuous times, it is about their position on digital distribution. Microsoft was the first to openly discuss the matter saying it gives the industry a new dimension, contrary to the generally held belief that it streamlines opportunities in the industry.

This time, it’s Sony U.K. Managing Director Ray Maguire’s turn to give his thoughts on downloading content and the widely used disc format. “What I think will happen is there will be a retail delivery model and then there’ll be a supplementary business,” said the Sony official, with the supplementary business being digital distribution. He added that while the new system of getting contents keep the experience fresh and new, there are still many years left for discs as games get bigger in size.

Maguire then talked about online gaming. He acknowledged the fact that it is Microsoft’s territory as of now but they are trying to build credentials. “I really think from a console base, the online side of it is an area where you’ve got to be competent to get in there and want to exist in that space. That’s the marketplace at the moment, but I think it will evolve from there,” reflected the Sony official.

The compact disc was actually first introduced to the market in 1982 by companies Phillips and Sony. Since then, the technology extended to different variations like CD-RW, DVD, HD DVD, Blu-Ray and others.
