GTA: Chinatown Wars not family-friendly, will have M rating, drug-dealing minigame

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars to include drug-dealing minigame - Image 1With Rockstar bringing the Grand Theft Auto franchise to the DS with Chinatown Wars, you’d think that they’d tone it down a bit to keep in line with Nintendo’s typically family-friendly handheld platform. Nope. Not if the Houser brothers has anything to say about it.

According to Rockstar’s Dan Houser, they’re sticking to their guns (no pun intended?) and keeping to the GTA spirit. The game even has a drug dealing minigame. Details after the link.

Nope.

According to Rockstar’s Dan Houser, they’re sticking to their guns (no pun intended?) and keeping to the GTA spirit. According to Houser:

No one disagreed with Sam [Houser, Rockstar president and Dan’s brother]’s very clear edict that GTA has to be an M rating. It can’t be softened to make it family-friendly – that’s not the game we’re making. We’ve never not done well by sticking to our guns.

Chinatown Wars won’t be the first game on the Ds to have an M rating (remember Dementium: The Ward?), but GTA is GTA. Its infamy knows no bounds. Is Nintendo – Nintendo, who is infamous for its squeaky-clean approach to games – okay with this? Apparently. In fact, Nintendo wanted the non-family-friendly game on the handheld:

Nintendo wanted us to make GTA, and we wanted to make a game on their platform. They didnÂ’t want us to make a GTA for kids, and we werenÂ’t interested in making a game we wouldnÂ’t normally make.

And just to prove how Chinatown Wars keeps to the Grand Theft Auto spirit, the game even has a complete drug-dealing minigame, which sounds like an homage to the classic Dope Wars game. In Chinatown Wars, you’ll have to peddle six kinds of drugs around the city by identifying market conditions, and the state of demand in various areas.

I. Must. Have. This. Game.
