It actually works: Solar Powered Wii!

Solar-Powered Wii - Image 1Talk about hacking and homebrew. The guys over at Tom’s Hardware made a netcast of sorts called Tom’s Workshop, and their first project was to talk about a working mobile version of the Wii that uses solar power.

Apparently, the folks there at Tom’s Hardware and Twitch Guru slapped an HD monitor onto a cart, fitted it with a Wii, and added power inverters, a battery and solar panels to derive power for the two gadgets. Here’s what else they had to say on building it:

The electricity is stored in the battery and then sent through the power inverter to both the Wii and the HD monitor and speakers… the panel contributes a (mostly) continuous flow of power to the battery, which is an integral part of prolonging the play time. Plus, all that’s needed to recharge the battery is leaving the cart out in direct sunlight.

There’s additional video, which you can find at the read link below. As for seeing their rationale behind it, as well as the overall cost for building one of these babies, you can visit the Read link we have as well.
