“All MMOs have a lifespan, that’s a fact,” quoth Warhammer Online designer Mark Jacobs as he explains why we should be playing WAR rather than WOW. Its days are numbered so we may as well start fresh, he reasons.

Au contraire, Mister Jacobs. There are 11 million people who might just disagree with you.

Yes, as the title states, Word of Warcraft crested the 11 million mark, continuing its undisputed spot as the most popular MMORPG in the world for four years running. While WoW indeed has a lifespan and certainly cannot last forever, the same can be said for the Sun and we’re a long way off from transferring solar systems just yet.

It should come as no surprise that these unprecedented figures come on the eve of the Wrath of the Lich King expansion’s release on November 13.

“It’s been very rewarding to see gamers around the world continue to show such strong support for World of Warcraft,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We remain fully committed to responding to that enthusiasm with a high-quality, constantly evolving game experience.”
