Konami’s Payton says MGS4 has 200 devs, talks DualShock 3

Konami MGS4: Gins of the Patriots - Image 1Konami Digital’s Ryan Payton of the Kojima Division was recently interviewed, and he revealed some production details about upcoming Sony PlayStation 3 exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Payton says the Kojima Productions team is now 200-strong, and dropped some hints on the Sony PS3 DualShock 3 controller as well.

Payton says that Kojima Productions is under a lot of pressure in the production of MGS4: Guns of the Patriots because it’s part of the high profile Metal Gear franchise.

“The way things are turning out, this (Metal Gear Solid 4) could be the first ‘must have’ Sony PlayStation 3 title on store shelves,” comments Payton. “So, in that sense, there’s a lot relying on it. People at Sony know that, and we’ve got literally 200 guys working on this title, day and night, making sure that it’s perfect.”

“This will be the premiere DualShock 3 supporting game coming out within the next six months,” adds Payton. “Gran Turismo 5 is, I’m sure, going to be impressive, but we’ve got some things that I can’t talk about that people are going to really dig.”

While Payton was mum on how the DualShock 3 will work out within Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, he did talk about some accounts that he observed when he let the media play MGS4 with the DualShock 3. He said:

What’s funny about the DualShock, though, I realized yesterday when some writers came in and I just placed the controller in their hands and had them play MGS4; for some reason it took them like ten or fifteen minutes to realize that the game had rumble. They would stop and say, “Oh! This — you’ve got the DualShock 3!” And it’s funny because you don’t really realize it unless it’s not there.

Konami’s Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was originally slated for release in 2007, but was delayed to 2008 for development reasons. It follows the stealthy exploits of hero Solid Snake as he tries to bring peace to a future torn by conflict.
